Natural disasters such as these occur often in Japan, but this was one of the unfortunate ones as they didn’t get much of a warning, although some people were able to tell due to the movement of water. According to the japanese government only 58% of people headed for higher land such as hills. Many people underestimated the tsunami and thought they’d be safe, they thought it was a small tsunami like the others they had experienced, so when it struck not many people were prepared or safe enough which led to more deaths
Phuket Tsunami - LauraAs the earthquake had hit the country's, many people knew a tsunami was going to arrive, as they are used to experiencing tsunami’s after an earthquake. People had prepared for the tsunami but none of which would imagine it could affect the countries as much as it did. The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami occurred when the Indian plate was subducted by the Burma plate, causing a megathrust earthquake, which shortly after triggered a series of horrific tsunami waves, killing 230,000 people over 14 different countries. Warning signs were unclear, although authorities prepared the area for a tsunami, as it was common for earthquakes to cause tsunami's. However, people were unsure of how powerful the disaster was going to be.
